Fishing at Winchester Bay/Salmon Harbor, Oregon

The 2004 fishing season was full of surprises. Different currents and warmer water meant that sea creatures were seen and caught off our coast that were unusual for our area. In September of 2004 this very large squid, one of a school of huge calamari, was caught by a passenger aboard the Strike Zone. The squid fought like salmon do, which is what everyone thought they were at first (they were not visible).  But when the lines were reeled aboard, the gear had been cut and there was no fish to gaff. This was a mystery until this 4.5-foot long monster was finally landed. Squid have very sharp beaks which they were using to cut the lines and free themselves when they were caught by the passengers of the Strike Zone.

My husband, Don Swafford, who fished out of Winchester Bay for over 30 years said that he never saw anything like this squid in all his years on the ocean. Scott Howard, captain of the Strike Zone, who has been fishing for most of his life (relax Scotty, I won't tell anyone how loooong a time that is), had also never seen anything like the school of squid that he and his passengers confronted the fall of 2004.
